If your system meets these requirements, install Adobe Reader 8.1 on your computer by opening the file: AdbeRdr810_en_US in the Software folder of this CD.
If you are not using a Windows machine, or are running Windows 95 or earlier, you will need to download the appropriate software yourself from the Adobe Reader download site.
Open the Continuing Chemistry pdf file and scroll down to the middle of the document. Find the page number field. It is at the top of the screen in later versions of the Reader, and at the bottom in older versions. It will display the page number of the text, and also the page number of the pdf file. Type a different number into that field to jump directly to that page of the book. The symbols on either side of the page number allow you to go: to the start of the file; back one page; forward one page; and to the end of the file. Some versions of the Reader also have Previous View and Next View arrows to the right of these symbols take you back to the previous Acrobat view, or foward one view. These arrows are especially useful when you have jumped from one Acrobat file to another (such as from the Teachers' PDF file to the Quiz file). If your version doesn't show these arrows, you can display them by Customizing the Toolbar (in the Tools menu).
Acrobat has some convenient keyboard shortcuts that are worth knowing.
On the very left of the screen you will see some icons ‘tags’(written sideways in earlier versions of the Reader): including one for Pages (Thumbnails) and Bookmarks. Click on the Bookmarks tag. It will open to show you the list of chapters. Click on any one, and you will jump directly to that chapter. The Thumbnails tag shows you each page of the text. You can scroll through these pages quickly with the scroll bar immediately to the right of the thumbnails. If you want to see more pages, widen this window by clicking on its right-hand edge and dragging it.
Click on the 'binoculars' icon to search the text for any word or phrase — or use the Edit menu (the word Edit at the top of your screen) and click on Find.
Use the View menu (the word View at the very top of the screen) to change the Layout. (In some versions of Adobe Layout is a separate menu inside the View menu, whereas in others it is just a section of the View menu.) Try out Single page, Continuous, and Continuous facing to see what they do. The View menu is also where you can Rotate the page if there is text printed sideways -- such as the periodic table at the end of the book. You can also change the layout by clicking on the icons at the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.
The 'CD' icons in the margin of Continuing Chemistry indicate that there is a link to content on the CD (PowerPoint shows, revision tasks or exam questions). You can open this content from Adobe Reader by clicking on the margin links. Notice that the mouse icon will change to a finger when you have located a hot-link.
You will not be able to copy text from, or print out Continuing Chemistry. To print the exam papers, either click on the print icon, or use the File menu and click on Print.
