The location of horticultural areas depends on a range of both natural and factors.

The ideal conditions include a mild climate with an average annual above 12 ºC, high sunshine hours (preferably over 2000 hours per year) especially during December to March when fruit is ripening, and few frost days. need to be deep, fertile and free draining. Regular , especially in spring when seeds have been planted, is preferred; otherwise an alternative water source is needed. These conditions help to maximise fruit growth. Flat to gently sloping is also best as it makes it easier to operate the large machinery that is used to sow and harvest crops.

Cultural requirements include things like excellent access as the produce from the farm is perishable. Service which offer experts such as soil and fertiliser representatives plus equipment retailers need to be easily accessible. New Zealand farmers are generally well qualified and excellent and development institutions are located throughout the country.
