The location of dairy farming areas depends on a range of both natural and factors.

The ideal conditions include a mild climate with an average annual above 10 ºC, high sunshine hours (preferably over 1500 hours per year), fertile and regular (preferably over 1000 mm per year). These conditions help to maximise grass growth. Flat to gently sloping is also best as cows put energy into milk production rather than going up and down hills.

Cultural requirements include things like excellent access as the milk tankers must call at least once a day. Service which offer experts such as veterinarians, soil and milking shed representatives plus equipment retailers need to be easily accessible. New Zealand farmers are generally well qualified and excellent and development institutions are located throughout the country, such as Lincoln College in Christchurch.
